Hunger: Reader wants to get human connections

Posted

Hi Andrew, this letter is in response to your letter (“Much remains the same In Sun City West,” Sun City West Independent, Oct. 21, 2020).

After searching active retirement communities for several years, my husband and I chose Sun City West. He is 56 and I am 53. We purchased a home in Sun City West two weeks after he turned 55 and have owned for one year and are now living here full time.

Although COVID-19 has shut down many opportunities to join the numerous clubs here, I am looking forward to knitting, pottery and joining the camera club, along with many other clubs. I have zero interest in my cell phone, laptop and iPad. Frankly, I am sick of all three.

I want human connection. I want to sit in a room with friends and knit, play cards and visit. I’m tired of Facebook, texting, video games and everyone staring at their phones. I want “old school.” The charm of Sun City West welcomed us with bells ringing and wonderful Sun City West Realtors who made us feel welcome. My Chit Chat Ladies group welcomed me with open arms and reassurances I was making the right decision moving here after living in Colorado for more than 50 years. My best friend in Sun City West is Richard, a handyman in his 70s we hired who helped me put our house together while my husband was back at our home in Colorado. He told me stories about Sun City West over many lunches — old school stories that I enjoyed hearing about and was grateful for the insider information and the friendship.

I am sure many “younger” people do want change, and some change can be good, but wanting to keep the “same in Sun City West” isn’t a bad thing to this 53-year-old ex city dweller! Minor tweaks here and there are often necessary to keep things “looking younger,” but the core idea of Sun City West needs to remain the same. This 53-year-old will take Sun City West “as is” any day of the week if Sun City West will take this 53-year-old!

I am looking forward to the clubs reopening and knitting a scarf for my 15-year-old niece who, by the way, loves knitting!
