Northwest Valley residents helped test nuclear alarms last week.
The Palo Verde Nuclear Power Plant, located about 45 miles west of downtown Phoenix, began operations in 1985. Federal regulations require an annual testing of the 70 outdoor warning sirens located within a 10-mile radius of the plant.
Amateur radio operator volunteers from the West Valley Amateur Radio Club and other groups were stationed at each siren and reported activation to headquarters. Volunteers reported all 70 sirens functioned.
The test also included alerts sent to cell phones in the area, and activation of electronic message signs along Interstate 10 in the West Valley.
