Getting to know the artists of Sun City: Magda Gryparis

Posted

Magda Gryparis was born in Athens, Greece and came to the United States with her husband and young son in 1969. From an early age she loved art and started taking classes at the Community Center in Middletown, Ohio with the artist Larry Doud.

Ms. Gryparis had found her life’s calling. Painting had a healing effect and she found herself in her art. Since then she has never stopped painting first as a hobby and later professionally.

Ms. Gryparis has worked in acrylic but favors oil. Later when she began painting landscapes of her native Greece, she turned to watercolors to capture the bright luminous colors she remembered. She has been working in watercolors ever since. The style and technique are uniquely her own, as she is a self-taught watercolor artist.

Ms. Gryparis has won numerous awards in exhibits and juried shows. She has shown work in galleries in Florida, Arizona, California, and Wisconsin. She has exhibited in many Greek Festivals in Madison Wisconsin. Ms. Gryparis has won many statewide awards in Wisconsin including the Carmen and Eva Beining Award and in 2018 Honorable Mention for the Wisconsin State Award Competition sponsored by the University of Wisconsin.

Ms. Gryparis is a member of the Peoria Fine Arts Association, Artists by the Lake Club and Palo Verde Art Club. She recently won first and second place for two paintings at the All Sun City Art Show as well as second place in the Glendale Art Show. On most days, she is in her home studio in Sun City.

“I am inspired by nature, it’s lights, shapes and colors,” said Ms. Gryparis. “This awesome world God has created for us to live in. I jealously want to capture this beauty for me to keep. It could be a tree, a sky, a raindrop, an instant in time, a sparkle of light, a flicker of movement. When I paint, I feel connected with God recreating his majesty, intact without distortion, without a personal interpretation, authentic.”
