By Dr. Diane Holloway Cheney | Sun City West
Having served on the Recreation Centers of Sun City West Governing Board, I learned that we cannot close golf courses without the permission of all those who abut a course and paid extra for that privilege.
In addition, if we offered to turn golf courses into parks, that could cost nearly the same, plus a large amount for more parking and toilets for park users, and there would be no income to cover those costs. The millions that come in from golf help to sustain the cost of golf course maintenance.
Our annual dues are not out of line with other senior communities of a similar quality. They cover the cost of running rec centers and golf courses for salaries and equipment.
My husband and I use no rec centers except the library due to our age and infirmities. But the pleasant lifestyle and lack of need to pay school taxes for most of us make it well worth the price, in our opinion.
We count as privileges that this community has no real crime problems, nor decay and blight found in some cities.
