Customers turn to remodel during pandemic

Home services are on the rise after many homeowners utilized vacation savings for home improvement.

According to homeadvisor.com, the covid-19 pandemic brought household spending for home projects up for more than $4,000. In addition, the website reads in 2019 the average amount was $9,078 and rose to $13,138 in 2020.

The community of Sun City West is no different, as local company based in Surprise, Faucet Doctor Plumbing and HVAC Services Owner Greg Singletary explained. Since 1994 Mr. Singletary and his wife Gina have been servicing the Sun Cities and expanded throughout the west valley during the recession in 2008. And prior to coming to Arizona, to take over the company after his father retired after working running the company since the 1980, Mr. Singletary was a plumber in Alabama. It is a family affair with his son also working as a journeyman plumber for the company for the past 15 years.

“This is a family business, but when we started it was just me and my wife,” he explained. “Now I am responsible for several families so it is important to keep this business going.”

When the pandemic first began, Mr. Singletary said the business operated week-to-week from spring until summer and every time there was a spike he and his wife worried the business may be shut down.

“But every week it had not,” he explained. “And then the next month the same thing would happen and we stayed going strong.”

Mr. Singletary said he feels personally responsible for all his employees and other than a little bit of stress everyone had to take on, business has been great.

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey deemed plumbers essential workers and customers continued to call throughout the pandemic. Mr. Singletary said when plumbing breaks customers are going to call. And with more people working from home, service is needed. If a toilet is not working, the business will get the call to fix it.

“Customers are also calling us wanting to get bathroom remodels done since they can’t go on vacation or anything,” Mr. Singletary explained.

The company has been operating wide open, as Mr. Singletary explains it saying the business is on record pace again this year. The company did not apply or receive an federal or local aid, nor had experienced any closures during the pandemic. One employee’s wife was positive for covid-19 and was forced to quarantine for 14 days, but other than that, it was business as usual for Faucet Doctor and HVAC Services.

Customers from 20 years back continue to call for service and some simply to inquire about a referral for various projects.

While Mr. Singletary said the company intends to continue operations are normal.

“We keep moving up every year and want to keep things the way we are going,” he explained. “This way has been the right way for a long time and has gotten bigger every year.”

But he said looking back to the time of the recession in 2008, he remembers his son saying there wasn’t much of a set back. But Mr. Singletary reminded him it was because he continued to get a check every week, while he and his wife struggled to borrow money and keep the business going.

“It meant something to me because this was my father’s business and it is good to know we are strong now,” he said.
