Name: Mary DiCaro.
Business name: MD Therapy and Wellness, LLC, mdtherapyandwellness.com.
Town/neighborhood: Peoria.
Personal background highlights: A Chicago native, I moved to Arizona in 1997 to expand my career in health and wellness.
Professional background highlights: Physical therapy has been the backbone of my passions and has served as a suitable jumping point to expand my interest in assisting people with a variety of health challenges. My recent interests have been educating patients and facilitating healing from chronic pain and disease. I have a special interest in integrating holistic approaches, incorporating body, mind and spirit, to achieve optimal wellness and reversing many of the conditions we associate with aging. I enjoy studying functional medicine, also known as root cause medicine, to unravel the complex causes at the root of most diseases.
What I do: I help people recover from injuries, understand and reduce sources of pain, achieve optimal fitness levels, recover and restore muscle, bone and joint health and adopt a healthier lifestyle. My mission is to connect with and help as many people as possible.
What I like most about doing business here: This has been a warm, welcoming community since moving here in 1997.
Changes I’d like to see in this area: I would love to see a more walkable community. I feel communities build around a hub of essential businesses, small grocers, locally owned businesses and farmers’ markets are the healthiest communities overall. They build a sense of healthy connections while providing the movement our bodies need to thrive. Also, a plan for sustainable community expansion that respects our environmental resources.
What do: I hope for the future and what would be an exciting next step: I hope to develop a healing space with other health practitioners providing affordable access to tools for preventing chronic pain and disease. Our traditional health care model is effective at treating acute illness but does not serve chronic conditions well. The current paradigm is waiting for someone to get sick, then treating the symptoms with pills or surgery. If access to functional medicine was mainstream, we could provide education on how to create health, rather than just treat disease.
Favorite community cause and why: There are so many wonderful causes that I love to support. I believe the work done through St Vincent De Paul and St Mary’s Food bank are my top two.
My family: I have two grown children in the medical field. My son is an internal medicine resident in Nevada and my daughter is a nurse. We have a beloved Maltese poodle that has brought us joy for more than 14 years. I enjoy hiking, swimming, teaching and traveling.
