Desert Garden Club, PRIDES team up for project
Posted
During the coronavirus shutdown, members of the Sun City West Desert Garden Club and the Sun City West PRIDES began their first ever joint project.
The PRIDES began planning the re-landscaping of the median along Meeker Boulevard, between Grand Avenue and R.H. Johnson Boulevard. Garden club members harvested four truckloads of mature plant material identified by the PRIDES for removal. Instead of being thrown in the landfill, this plant material was, essentially, recycled.
The harvested mature plant material was cleaned and potted, and after rooting will eventually be sold this fall by the garden club to benefit construction of a new greenhouse. Some of the plants harvested include large cuttings of what is commonly known as Mexican Organ Pipe cactus, large Golden Barrel cactus, and assorted symmetrical agave.
These plants will be sold at the club’s current greenhouse in the back courtyard of the Beardsley Recreation Center.
Because the club’s greenhouse has been closed during the coronavirus shutdown, the cleaned and potted plant material is being stored at the Sun City West home of Lynn Krabbe and Bruce Kilbride, who are both garden club and PRIDES members. The two are watering and otherwise tending to these now-potted and rooting plants. The idea for this joint project was Ms. Krabbe’s.
