Cohen: Volunteering is important and rewarding

Posted

Since moving to Sun City West five years ago, I have been involved as a volunteer in a variety of ways, each time with the goal of helping the community and the surrounding area in general.

It is important and quite rewarding to be involved with an organizations that reaches out and offers help and important information.

For the past year, I have been involved with the Recorded Recreational Reading For The Blind, hosting a couple of information programs on the organization’s online radio offering, KRUV Radio Sun. In addition to the streaming radio station, which has a variety of programs, the organization also records books for sight-impaired clients, after a more than 4-decade long career in news radio as a writer, producer, editor and correspondent.

I was also a volunteer member of the Sun City West Foundation’s Board of Directors for a time and spent four years as a volunteer show host for Sun City West’s KSCW Radio.

Doing this is enjoyable and has connected me with many others who volunteer. If people can, they should help out and consider joining an organization that helps the community either by keeping residents informed or by helping people get around, such as volunteers at Northwest Valley Connect. People can also volunteer at Helping Hands, which provides important medical equipment to people in need or volunteer at a food bank.

Volunteering is a great way to help the community and meet new friends.
