Classic cars bring back old memories, and for some, the chance to create new ones.

Almost 25 years ago, Lyle and Judy Peterson moved to Sun City West and one year ago, one of their three children, Cheryl Wisneski started increasing visits after Mr. Peterson was diagnosed with cancer. He was receiving chemotherapy and blood transfusions monthly until a few weeks ago, when he transitioned into home hospice care.

I would do anything under the sun to see my dad’s smile. It’s a great one,” she said.

Ms. Wisneski and Mr. Peterson were talking one day when he mentioned the 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air he drove when he met his wife. She said he has always been a car guy and lights up whenever he talks about it.

“My dad is a big NASCAR fan and we watch the Barrett Jackson Auction and it is fun to see him so happy,” Ms. Wisneski said. “We don’t know how much time my dad has left and he is the best person that I have ever known in my whole entire life and I want to do things to make him happy. We don’t know if he has a month or 10 years, and we want to make any time he has left here with us to be very happy and full of good memories. He is a great man.”

Ms. Wisneski wanted to give her dad another reason to smile and reached out the Automotive and Restoration Club of Sun City West. Club member Dave Meyer answered the call and showed up with his 1957 Chevrolet and pulled it right up onto the driveway May 18.

“We had him sitting outside in the courtyard of the house and Dave pulled up. My dad was wondering why the car was outside of his home and went over to take a look,” Ms. Wisneski said. “He got into that car and sat down like he was a 16-year-old and put his arm out the window and I could see him smiling under his mask. It was a really good memory.”

The car ride was 25 minutes. Ms. Wisneski had the ride was set up for her mom as well, but she said this was a memory for father and daughter.
