Challenging RCSCW manager to debate isn’t constructive, reader says

Posted

In light of recent commentary concerning a proposed public debate with our Recreation Centers of Sun City West general manager, I believe it is both timely and necessary to offer a perspective that underscores the importance of respectful discourse and thoughtful engagement within our community.

As a longtime resident of Sun City West, I believe it’s important to address the recent call for a public debate with our general manager regarding the RCSCW strategic plan.

Constructive dialogue is the foundation of any healthy community, and I value the fact that residents are paying close attention to important issues like our strategic plan. However, how we engage in that dialogue is just as important as the topics we raise.

Our general manager has shown a consistent willingness to meet with residents one on one and encourages open, respectful conversations. Issuing a public challenge to a debate through the newspaper sidesteps those efforts and shifts the focus from collaboration to confrontation. That approach may draw attention, but it doesn't bring us closer to solutions.

The strategic plan was not created in a vacuum. It reflects careful planning, diverse input and a clear focus on long-term community improvement. If someone has concerns, there are proper and effective ways to bring them forward — ways that strengthen, rather than strain, the bonds of our community.

We all have the right to speak up, but let’s use that right in a way that fosters respect, not rivalry. We solve more when we sit at the table than when we shout across the room.
