A major upgrade is complete at a Recreation Centers of Sun City West facility.

The lighting at Beardsley Recreation Center pool, 12755 W. Beardsley Road, just underwent a major upgrade, and the patching and painting where the old fixtures used to be are expected to be completed Friday, Sept. 24.

Karl Wilhelm, Recreation Centers of Sun City West facilities manager, said as that project wraps, the work will move to R.H. Johnson Recreation Centers, 19803 N. RH Johnson Blvd., where a complete flooring restoration of all restrooms, hallways and locker rooms will begin Monday, Sept. 27.

“We are going to close for phase one of the flooring project for two weeks and in that time we are going to do all the heavy demolition and dirty work getting all the flooring out from the fitness side of the recreation center, including doing major deck repairs to the pool,” he explained.

Some of the acrylic surfaces around the pool are flaking due to high use and that will require a two-week closure.

Then, the lobby will open, as well as the pool, but contractors will continue work behind plastic curtains to install new flooring in the fitness area. Wilhelm said there will be up to another 2-week closure some time in November to do the outside areas. One item includes the removal of dead palm trees.

The Kuentz project is two phases that began Sept. 15 with the closure of the north parking lot near the woodshop, which will take approximately one week. Then the project moves to the south lot and the north will be reopened. Wilhelm said there will always be some form of access to the building at all times.

Pam Sievers posted to the Recreation Centers of Sun City West’s Facebook page, thanking the association for completing the Kuentz project in sections and keeping it open.

Looking ahead, the metal shop project is active and in progress once again. According to Wilhelm, Arizona Public Service had a major backlog and was unable to fix the issue of an electrical primary line. But the company arrived Sept. 7, the new conduit was installed and the work on the building was expected the week of Sept. 20.

Wilhelm said looking ahead is an important step. Next year roofing maintenance is likely to take place on pro shops and maintenance buildings pending the proposed 2021-22 fiscal year budget when presented.
