Sun City West residents need to take action on BNSF facility in Surprise

Posted

BNSF is in the process of building a development in close proximity to us here in Sun City West. They plan an intermodal rail and logistics center on 4,300 acres just 15 minutes west of Sun City West. They also plan 839 acres for a logistics park, which will cover 18 million square feet of desert land with industrial buildings.

BNSF plans to meet with Maricopa County Board of Supervisors in August and begin construction in 2025. They plan to be operational by 2028. Drive down 303/60 and you will see that current traffic far exceeds capacity, in my opinion.

Also at issue is water. BNSF will impact monsoon run-off due to the warehouses and impermeable surfaces.

Human health, safety, and well-being are issues. There are articles published regarding BNSF facilities near Chicago and Kansas City exceeding air quality standards. The clear air you enjoy when you golf and play pickleball may be impacted by fumes from trains and trucks.

BNSF has asked for a variance to Maricopa County to allow taller lighting with lights 120 feet and no cover or filter. No more “dark skies,” if this gets approval.

Please get involved! Contact your state legislators, Board of Supervisors and planning board to share your thoughts about this upcoming issue.
