Blog celebrates aging women

Posted

Name: Jodie Filogomo

Age: 55.

Business name: Jodie’s Touch of Style

Personal background highlights: I am a retired cosmetic dentist who has always been interested in clothes and shopping. When I sold my practice, I started an online blog to give other women inspiration for styling the clothes they have in their closets.

What I do: I am the voice behind Jodie’s Touch of Style (jtouchofstyle.com) where I showcase not only myself wearing outfits, but also my mother, 83, and friend, Lesley, 71). We are three different decades of women with different body shapes and different likes/dislikes. My motto is, “It’s never too late to look great,” and we concentrate on styling on a budget. Not only do we talk about how to style clothing items, but we are exploring our area at the same time. We’ve toured and explored many places in the Valley and beyond. Many times I share these experiences and give tips about what to wear when visiting these venues.

Professional background highlights: I’ve been blogging for more than eight years now and have worked with amazing companies and brands that I wouldn’t have known otherwise. What I’ve learned is at this stage of the game, all women yearn for comfortable footwear that still looks great. I’ve discovered many brands and share that information often. Most recently, I worked with AARP showcasing their member benefits that apply to women our age, jtouchofstyle.com/celebrate-savings-at-every-age-with-aarp-member-benefits/.

What I’m excited about and why: I’ve learned so much about women and style in this blogging journey. I get so excited when I can inspire women to have fun with their style and enjoy it instead of being worried about following the rules. I’ve had countless women reach out and thank me for introducing them to color and promoting the fact that we can love our bodies. Just because our bodies are aging, does not make them bad. While brands still focus on the younger women as their models, the three of us on the blog give proof that we can still look fabulous!

Where I was before and why I left: The blog started when we were living in Denver, Colorado. At that time, I used both my mother and stepmom as my models. In fact, I share much of our personal background on the blog, too, because it’s such a unique concept that my mother and stepmother are part of the story. My husband and I moved to Sun City two years ago and my mom moved out here at the same time. My mom lives in Peoria and my friend, Lesley, is here in Sun City. My stepmom still lives in Denver, although I still feature her on the blog when we get together for our family trips.

My family: The blog really is a family affair since my husband is the photographer and videographer for our adventures. We also have two elderly, rescued kitties. I share many of our behind-the-scenes activities in my daily emails. This is a perfect reason to sign up for my emails (subscribepage.com/z1e6m2) to get the inside scoop. Besides, you also receive a copy of my eBook about styling accessories.

My interests and hobbies: One of my creative outlets, when I was a dentist, was knitting. I still enjoy creating sweaters and all kinds of knitted projects. However, I did purge most of my wool yarn when we moved to Arizona. My husband and I also follow a nutrient-dense way of eating and try to stay healthy with all kinds of different physical activities. Recently, we tried aerial classes, and right now we take a Pilates mat class and water aerobics, both offered by Recreation Centers of Sun City.

People who inspire me (and how): My mother is one of my greatest inspirations. It’s so heartwarming to see an 83-year-old woman still take pride in her appearance and enjoy looking stylish. As for other inspirations, I find many on Instagram. I know many older women don’t understand the advantage of social media, but it’s analogous to the magazines we grew up with. There are women on the platform that embrace their grey hair or talk about body and age positivity. Those are the issues I love to read about and it makes me realize that aging is a good thing.

My guiding philosophy: It’s no secret that the better we look, the better we feel. I believe we should have fun with our clothes and try all different kinds of styles and colors. Gone are the days where a woman is restricted by her age for what she can wear. In fact, the three of us recently showcased items bought at Old Navy, which could be considered a young girl’s store. The moral of the story is there are no labels inside our clothing that say, “for women aged 40 or under.”

My advice to today’s youth: We are blessed to get older as I have learned over and over when people younger than me pass away. Because of this, it’s silly to be upset about the changes that happen to our bodies. Instead, let’s embrace the birthdays and find joy in each day.
