Beardsley swim, fitness center opens Sept. 21

50 percent occupancy

A third fitness and swim facility is set to open in Sun City West.

The Beardsley Recreation Center, 12755 W Beardsley Road, will be open to owner-members at 50% capacity beginning Sept. 21. Additionally, R.H. Johnson Recreation Center, 19803 N. R.H. Johnson Blvd.; Palm Ridge Recreation Center, 13800 W Deer Valley Drive; and Beardsley Recreation Center will also have locker and shower rooms open for use to all members.

According to David Bennett, Recreation Centers of Sun City West facilities manager, clubs hours will also be expanded and remaining open until 6 p.m. Monday-Friday. Prior to the announcement, doors closed at 4 p.m. He added extending the hours will help to accommodate more people.

“Starting Sept. 21 we will stop doing temperature checks at the doors and that will free up staff to be able to maybe move back where they used to work,” Mr. Bennett said. “We will continue to do symptom checks at the check-in counter and will quit using the sign-in sheet at the fitness centers everyday to sign up for tomorrow’s schedule. We will continue to do equipment reservations, but we are going to the old process and sign up day of by calling or going in. But we will still only be at 50% for cardio machines, which is every other machine.”

Also opening Sept. 21 will be a few fitness clubs, which RCSCW Activities Manager James Riley said is exciting due to the clubs following social distancing guidelines.

“This allows us to move forward and we are going to be able to allow clubs to the use the facilities and open up some clubs that have been restricted,” he said.

As previously stated, RCSCW officials will not allow guests at recreation facilities due to capacity restraints and is a policy built on fairness. RCSCW General Manager Bill Schwind and staff wants to ensure it is available to members. However, accommodations are being made for golf and bowling as those are business venues and important to the association’s economic health, according to Mr. Schwind.
