Art Club workshop is on rendering shapes

David Coutts will teach a workshop on rendering shapes 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22, in the Kuentz Art Room.

This is a skill for anyone who wants to draw, a process made up of four basic shapes: the box, the pyramid, the cylinder and the sphere. The post-impressionist artist Paul Cezanne observed that if one could convincingly render these four shapes, they could render anything. Understanding how to shade these four basic objects and learning how to combine them can make drawing and/or painting virtually anything a snap.

This is a one-day workshop that will demonstrate how to correctly plot and render values on these four shapes to make them into completely convincing three-dimensional shapes. Learn about reflected light, highlights, core shading and transitional values and how they affect the surfaces of both planar (flat) and curvilinear (curved) objects. These basic skills are essential to drawing.

There will be no specific art medium involved. Needed are a sketchbook, drawing pencils (soft leads only such as 2B, 4B, 6B and 8B), a portable pencil sharpener and erasers (both a block eraser and a pencil eraser are recommended as well as a kneaded eraser).

The fee for this class is $60 for Art Club members. There will be a wait list for guests. Sun City West resident guests will be charged an additional $10; non residents will pay $20. Registration under “classes” at art.scwclubs.com.
