Sun City West isn't a place for schools, reader says

Posted

This is another letter regarding the Victory Autism School coming to Sun City West.

As previous letter writers have written, the formation documents of Sun City West state that a non-school tax district was formed. This means no schools are to be allowed in any of the Sun Cities, whether private, public, charter, parochial or any other school. Did Victory Autism get around this by being a private school instead of public?  A school is a school no matter if it's private or otherwise.

I, like many others, am a firm believer that this has set a new precedent. This isn't against kids or against learning. It's about a physical school in a retirement community. This is now the crack in the door and other exceptions to the rule may be in our future.

Remember that Youngtown started off back in the 1950s as an age-restricted retirement community.  No kids allowed and no schools. But someone petitioned to have a 16-year-old live there and a lawsuit started that ended up in court where the judge threw out the retirement status of Youngtown.  Now anyone can live there, and it all began because someone wanted to make an exception to the rule. Let's not end up like Youngtown!
