AARP Historic Chapter #1 will be hosting a fundraising Shred-A-Thon 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2 in the parking lot of the Youngtown Shopping Center, located on the southwest corner of 111th Avenue and Alabama in Youngtown.

While the event is free to the public, suggested donations are $2 per banker sized boxes or electronic items.

There will be two shredding trucks on site and volunteers will unload papers and shred them while you watch. They will also be accepting electronic items for recycling, including amplifiers and audio equipment, cables and connections, cameras, computer equipment, tablets and accessories, VCRs, DVDs, Blu-Ray players, DVRs, DIRECT TV, TiVo, LCD flat screen TVs and monitors, phones, satellite receivers, speakers and microphones, video cameras and video gaming equipment.

AARP Arizona will supply the shredding trucks and support the event.

The club uses Shred-A-Thon donations to support local charities, non-profit organizations, education programs and to fund community events like the annual Health, Safety and Pet Festival held every spring in Greer Park.

AARP Historic Chapter #1 in Youngtown was the very first chapter chartered in the United States and is the oldest continuing community chapter of AARP in the world. The chapter was founded in 1960 and incorporated Oct. 20, 1969.
