Wright: Country could learn from Sun City group

Posted

The Sun City Posse is a successful example of community involvement in health and safety that the rest of American could learn from.

As the Posse says, “We are not law enforcement; we are your neighbors, dedicated to adding an extra measure of security and reassurance for Sun City residents and their property.”

Protesters are calling for community-led response teams that are dedicated to the welfare of its residents, like our Posse provides. The Posse organizes the Block Watch, regularly goes by homes that are left vacant by winter visitors and performs welfare checks. I’ve seen the Posse respond with a kind, helping attitude, whether it’s searching for my uncle who got lost on a walk or notifying the neighbors when a litter of kittens was found in a carport.

I’d like to see every community have a posse of their own, made up of volunteers from the neighborhood serving the neighborhood. It won’t solve all of the problems we’re facing as a country — for one thing, we need transparent data and accountability to understand how we are being policed so we can make positive change. But having an independent posse is a great step forward and takes a lot of pressure off law enforcement officers, who can be called in only when really needed.
