World War II veteran celebrates 100th birthday
Posted
World War II veteran and pilot Robert W. Zinser celebrated his 100th birthday Sept. 25 at Briarwood Country Club, 20800 N. 135th Ave.
Zinser has lived independently in his Sun City West home since 1991, and Joan Worsham has been his significant other for 20 years. Until his late 80s, he was a member of the men’s group at Trail Ridge Golf Course.
Zinser was discharged from active duty in 1945 and remained in the Army Air Corps reserves until being honorably discharged in April 1958. After the war, he went back to the University of Illinois in 1948, graduating with a bachelors degree in geology and simultaneously graduating from the School of Aeronautics as a flight instructor, so he could teach students how to fly. In 1950, he got his masters degree in geology from the University of Kansas.
Zinser was hired in 1950 by Sun Oil, headquartered in Dallas, TX. He and his family lived in Midland, Abilene and Richardson, TX. He was the senior geologist for the Sun Oil exploration division, and when he retired in 1984 from Sun Oil Dallas headquarters, he was the manager of geology for Michigan.
