Van Roekel: Bicyclists must follow rules of the road in Sun City

Posted

Due to the closure of the Sun City recreation centers I have been riding my bike for exercise.

I ride at 7 a.m. to avoid the heat. I meet many people out for walks and bike riding. I have taught driver education several years and included bicycle safety in my work.

I have been disappointed in some of the bike riders I meet. Some are riding on the wrong side of the road thinking that is what pedestrians do. I see bike riders flying through stop signs and others displaying improper bike safety.

A bike is a vehicle and has to follow the rules of the road like a car, golf car, etc. A bicyclist has to ride on the right side of the road with traffic. They must stop at stop signs, yield to pedestrians and other vehicles that have the right-of-way, use hand signals (especially for left turns), etc. When passing another cyclist give advanced verbal warning like “bike on your left.”

We are in this all together so let’s cycle safely.
