Trio of Sun City swimmers light up new U-of-A pool

Three members of the Sun City Starrs swam at the 29th Annual Polar Bear Classic in Tucson, at the new U-of-A Hillenbrand Aquatic Center. More than 140 Masters swimmers entered the meet to inaugurate the facility for the Masters program.
The trio of Karen MacClean, Bill Shaw and Bill Travis had personal best times or very close to personal bests. They’d been practicing for two months for this meet.
• Mr. Shaw (60-64): 1,000 yards free, 3rd place (15:31.47); 200 yards free, 4th place (2:46.91); 100 yards free, 6th place (1:12.03); 100 yards IM, 6th place (1:30.21), 500 yards free, 4th place (7:42.67).
• Ms. McClean (60-64): 200 yards free, 1st place (2:54.60); 200 yards back, 1st place (3:20.02); 100 yards breast, 3rd place (1:44.97); 100 yards IM, 2nd place (1:30.93); 500 yards free, 2nd place (7:42.85).
• Mr. Travis (70-74): 1,000 yards free, 1st place (16.29.02); 200 yards free, 1st place (2:52.72); 100 yards free, 2nd place (1:15.63); 500 yards free, 2nd place (7:59.49); 50 yards free, 3rd place (31.82).
The Starrs Swim Team meets 7-9 a.m. Monday through Friday at the Bell Recreation Center, 16820 N. 99th Ave. New members are always welcome to join.
