Totten: Become active to reverse board decision in Sun City

Posted

“I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going to take it anymore!” Uttered by Howard Beale, anchorman of UBS TV from the movie “Network.”

In the fall of 2020, Karen McAdam decided to run for the Recreation Centers of Sun City Board of Directors. She met all of the stated requirements, garnered her 100 signatures on her petition, submitted her signed conflict of interest declaration establishing there were none and became a registered candidate. Karen went on to win a board seat for a 3-year term (with the third highest number of votes).

She hit the ground running, proving her exemplary qualifications by continuing her quest to work for the members of RCSC by repeatedly asking good questions, and by not always settling for the easy answer. As I viewed the Sun City YouTube board meetings, it was very evident that Karen’s thoroughness and research annoyed other board members; she often voted alone on important matters.

This annoyance finally surfaced at the June 24 board meeting with an egregious manner exhibited by some members, both those of the board and those in the audience, and further resulted in Karen being “booted” from the board in a hastily called (so it seemed at the time) executive session the next day.

I cry foul! I want her back on the board! She’s my candidate who, time and time again, proved that just nodding her head yes and going along with the crowd was not how she operated. I liked that! She was working for me, a member.

What can I do? Write a letter to the editor of this paper. Conduct a meeting with like-minded individuals to plot out a plan. Create a Facebook group dedicated to supporting and returning Karen McAdam to her rightful place on the board. Insert a thread in the General Discussion area of the website Talk of Sun City to bring awareness to the issue. Encourage others who support Karen to get involved.

Please consider doing the same.
