Thornley: Women’s guild separates from Sun City church

The Women’s Guild at St. Clement of Rome in Sun City sadly announce the separation of the Guild from St. Clement’s Parish. The closing of the Clementique Shop and the end of Julia Chesna Trust has diminished our scholarship fundraising for the St. John Paul II high school seniors. This unfortunate event is due to circumstances beyond our control. We are currently reorganizing as a guild elsewhere.

Our Guild was formed 48 years ago to raising funds for the bell tower at St.Clement’s. When the bell tower was completed the Guild continued fundraising efforts for local charities, including Warriors Best Friend, Habitat for Humanity and the Children’s Crisis Foundation, among others in a lengthy list.
Over the last four years our primary fundraising efforts have been two college scholarships for deserving seniors at St. John Paul II High School in Avondale, which were chosen by the principal. The Guild has also directly assisted the parishioners of St. Clement’s over many years through rummage sales, bake sales and most recently the Clementique sales. This was accomplished through the generous, thoughtful and loving donations of past and present parishioners, plus others not from St. Clement’s as they downsized or transitioned to assisted living.
Although the Clementique is closed and the rummage sales at St. Clement are now over, the Ladies Clothing Closet will continue in the hall as part of the Parish.
The Guild members wish to thank all the wonderfully generous people who donated items, visited the Clementique and helped the eight graduates of St. John Paul II who received the college scholarships provided by the Guild. You have all made our time at St. Clement’s a pleasure.
