Sun Health Foundation sponsors ice cream social

For Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center patients, staff

More than 200 patients and families attended Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center Surgical Clinic’s 5th annual Ice Cream Social Nov. 4, sponsored by Sun Health Foundation.

The event “served” as a special time for patients and families to reunite with physicians and staff to celebrate life and share expressions of gratitude for exceptional cancer care.

Guests “got the scoop” not only for sundaes served by physicians and staff – with their choice of toppings – but also on exciting program updates thanks to community support that makes possible advancements in cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Everyone was welcomed by Gina Ore, Chief Philanthropy Officer for Sun Health Foundation, followed by remarks from Dr. Elbert Kuo, Thoracic Surgeon and Section Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center; Dr. John Breard, Thoracic Surgeon; Dr. Brett Broussard, Thoracic Surgeon; and Dr. Walter Wakwe, Thoracic Surgeon.

“With donations from the community to Sun Health Foundation, we’re honored to direct those funds for the purchase of the most advanced medical equipment that Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center physicians need to best serve patients,” said Ore.

“The growth of our Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center Surgical Clinic would not have been possible without the support of Sun Health Foundation and our community,” said Dr. Kuo to attendees. “Thank you, Sun Health Foundation, for your support that allows us to provide state-of-the-art care.”

Along with the refreshing treats served by physicians and staff, the afternoon included socialization, drawings for prizes, the sharing of stories and a photo booth with props for pictures of physicians together with patients and staff.

Community-supported robotic technology for thoracic cancer diagnosis and surgical treatment are contributing to improved outcomes and the patient experience.

The new robotic-assisted bronchoscopy at Banner Boswell Medical Center already has seen more than 200 patients since its arrival in June 2022. In addition, more than 1,400 robotic surgeries have been performed.

When Bob Colli needed surgery, twice, he says both robotic surgeries enhanced his recovery: “I was able to return home sooner and recover more quickly.”
