Sun City West clubs rally to help those in need
Posted
The Sun City West Automotive Restoration Club and Tennis Club joined forces to help a local charity and the environment.
Realizing that 200 million pairs of shoes and sneakers going into landfills every year in America, the two clubs partnered with the Helping At Risk Teens Pantry to recycle old sneakers, which in turn provides HART with much needed funding. HART receives $1 for each pair of recycled shoes. Gotsneakers? is a nationwide sneaker recycling organization. Visit gotsneakers.com.
HART began in 2011 as a mission of the First Presbyterian Church of Peoria and also provides weekend food bags to teens in the West Valley who don’t have enough food to eat when they are not in school on weekends.
The two clubs have collected more than 250 pairs of sneakers so far. There are shoe containers in the ARC building and at the tennis courts (on lower level by bulletin board). Both club presidents — Tom Jones of ARC and Bruce Dougan of Tennis — encourage the community to go through their closets and garages and bring those old sneakers in, “and feel good about helping!”
