Sun City PRIDES jump right into winter work

The Sun City PRIDES are always busy, even during the summer months, but they are now looking ahead to the fall as more residents return and refocus on keeping Sun City Beautiful.
The Saturday Squad, led by Jerry Kavanagh, moved from its once per month summer schedule to every Saturday morning, working on various areas in the three phases of Sun City as the need arises. Meet-up locations and times are communicated to members by email.
Meanwhile, select individual volunteers continue to maintain assigned areas and are ready to respond to any immediate needs they see or suggestions from residents.
“We are looking forward to the cooler temperatures and continue the important work of keeping Sun City beautiful,” said Molly Soblewski, Sun City PRIDES president. “Our work is performed by volunteers that give freely of their time and energy.”
Earlier this year, the Sun City Prides planted dwarf pink oleander shrubs along Bell Road. Volunteers also planted the medians along Del Webb Boulevard with lantana, Katie Ruellia, damanitia and golden barrel cactus.
The PRIDES executive board of Molly Soblewski, Pat Richardson, Ritchie Miller and Rosie Swain remind residents they can be a part-time Sun City resident and still be a PRIDES member.
In addition to landscape maintenance, volunteers this season will be able to assist with several projects. These include planting drought-tolerant vegetation on Alabama Avenue and helping to revitalize the vegetation at PRIDES Park on Peoria Avenue. Work on PRIDES Park will commence, according to the PRIDES Beautification Committee Chairman Mike Will, as soon as Maricopa County approves the planting plan. Irrigation has already been installed.
The next monthly meeting of the Sun City PRIDES is 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2 in the social halls at Bell Recreation Center, 16820 N. 99th Ave.
