Following the Sept. 5 general meeting of the Sun City Posse, Posse members and visitors were treated to a one-time event to celebrate and commemorate the Posse’s 50th year serving the Sun City community. This unique event was to create a time capsule containing historical memorabilia dating back to the organization of the Sun City Posse in 1973 and to seal it in a specially designed boxed location in a wall in the lobby at Posse headquarters. The opening of the time capsule is slated to be 10 years in the future, in 2033. Visitors to headquarters can see the plaque created and donated by the Sun City Woodworking Club that seals the time capsule location.
A complete list of the contents in the time capsule was read to those on hand for the occasion. Some of the items included are a pink t-shirt from Posse days under Sheriff Joe Arpaio; a bag of dimes to symbolize those early years before radio communication was available when patrol had to stop at a “pay phone” to call in an incident; the earliest located version and more recent version of the 10-14 membership newsletter; a sheriff’s badge; dispatch logs; and other items reminiscent of the early beginnings to the present day.
The Posse, under the leadership of Commander Sarah Davis, has found many ways to celebrate this milestone anniversary year. The time capsule is a special one. Another wonderful way to commemorate this 50th year was a donation from an anonymous resident that was used to purchase the beautiful new monument sign in front of Posse headquarters, given to honor the donor’s sister’s memory in a lasting way.
On Oct. 14, the Posse will host a 50th Anniversary Jubilee Fest in the headquarters parking lot as a way of thanking all of Sun City for their years of continuous support. Area businesses including The Nixon Group, Kathleen Holtz/NFM Lending and First Integrity Title and Bill Romley of State Farm Insurance have joined hands with the Posse to sponsor the activities of the day. The Posse has also received support from RCSC. All residents of Sun City are invited to stop by and enjoy the celebration from noon to 3 p.m.
