Sun City Meals on Wheels seeks new ways to serve the community

Posted

Sun City Meals on Wheels has been delivering meals for 52 years, but with the cost of food increasing, the board is concerned there may be a large segment of the population in Sun City and Youngtown who might benefit from meal delivery, but cannot afford the meal service.

Sun City Meals on Wheels is seeking ways to help those who could benefit from lower cost meals. They currently do provide subsidies to those in need who are currently receiving the EPCOR or APS subsidy.

Nor do they receive any federal or state funding; rather, they are dependent on donations to operate. Other than two part-time office managers who job share, they rely on volunteers for every aspect of their business. They have kept pace with the growth and challenges over the years, working hard to meet all the challenges time brings to their effort. This year, they will introduce two new operating programs providing current technology, ease and efficiency in everything they do.

Sun City Meals on Wheels recently applied to be an Arizona Qualified Charitable Organization. This means that if someone wants to donate to Sun City Meals on Wheels, they can get a dollar-for-dollar tax credit on their Arizona Taxes. They hope this will encourage donors and permit a price reduction in meals.

Volunteers deliver meals to those who either need assistance with meal preparation or who cannot shop and cook for themselves. There are also clients who just don’t want to cook—they would rather spend their time enjoying the many opportunities available in Sun City for recreation.

Sun City Meals on Wheels wants to be a service to the community. Its members work to keep the cost of meals as low as possible while still providing meals that are suitable to those who require a special diet. They subsidize those who have experienced circumstances that may prevent them from accessing their services. Board members want to go even further and help all clients, especially in today’s difficult economic environment. Their goal is to encourage donors to contribute so they can lower the cost of meals to clients.

Call 623-974-9430 if interested in donating or learning more about the meal subsidy program.
