Metro Creative Connection
By Eric Hoagland | Sun City
Not long ago, aided by local medical people, I had some old parts exchanged for new ones and discovered my need for help. Having family nearby, this need was satisfied. At that time, I became acutely aware that many Sun City friends and neighbors aren’t as fortunate.
The clock turns for all of us. Where can you get help when you need it? I’m proud to be a volunteer for Sun City Meals on Wheels. Our organization, with the exception of two part-time office personnel, is staffed entirely with unpaid volunteers. Their reward is knowing they supplied “life-saving” assistance to the people in their community that needed them. The driving force for this service is compassion. We care about every person that reaches out to us for help.
Many in Sun City, for myriad reasons — can’t drive, can’t cook, aren’t physically able to prepare meals for themselves — identify how we can help and reach out to us. No judgement is involved.
Meals on Wheels can provide two meals each day 365 days a year. This includes weekends and holidays. Hot meals and cold meals are provided.
A menu is published monthly detailing each day’s food selection. For consistency, the menu has minimal changes month to month. If a day’s entree doesn’t appeal to someone, they can contact the office at least 24 hours ahead of their scheduled delivery to cancel that delivery. Several people get deliveries a few days each week. The service is tailored to your needs.
Sun City Independent readers can help by reaching out to residents who may have nutrition needs. As good as publications are — they don’t reach everyone. No finder’s fees — just the satisfaction knowing you helped someone. Please help!
Lastly, we say thanks to all the “givers.” We appreciate immensely your time, energy and donations. Meals on Wheels only exists because of you.
For anyone interested in volunteering, there is only one major requirement — you must want to help others in need.
A short note on technology. Meals on Wheels uses the telephone, so computer skills are not required. Special needs are accommodated. Call 623-974-9430. Your questions will be answered. Please, please call us. We’re here for you.
We’re all in this together.
