Sun City Cycling Club to host ride challenge

Route covers 8 miles

The Cycling Club of Sun City threw down the gauntlet — or in this case the cycling glove.

The club will host the “12 Hours of Sun City Cycling Challenge” Friday-Saturday, July 17-18 through the streets of the community. The event is designed not only to promote cycling, but as a fundraiser for the All Saints of the Desert Episcopal Church, 9502 W. Hutton Drive, outreach program.

The challenge is being conducted in conjunction with the Southwest Bicycle Cycling Club. Funds raised will be from voluntary donations from riders, but a donation is not required to ride, according to Warren Smock, Sun City Cycling Club president. Riders in the challenge do not have to be members of either cycling club.

People who do not participate can also donate to the effort by dropping off the donation during that night at the church or mailing contributions, marked specifically to “12-Hour Challenge,” to All Saints of the Desert Episcopal Church, 9502 W. Hutton Drive, Sun City, AZ 85351.

The overnight event will begin 7 p.m. July 17 with the All Saints parking lot as the staging and start and finish area. Cyclists will ride an eight-mile loop until 7 a.m. July 18. Participants can ride from one to as many loops as they can complete by Saturday morning, according to Mr. Smock.

“Several riders will ride the loop 13 times to do 100 miles, sometimes referred to as the Baker’s Dozen 100 (century),” he stated in an email.

The route will start going east on Hutton Drive from the church, then right on Greenway Road, left on Cameo Drive, cross Thunderbird Boulevard and stay right to stay on Cameo Drive, left on Agua Fria Drive, left again on Agua Fria Drive and follow it back to All Saints of the Desert Episcopal Church.

“Sun City residents should be aware of increased bicycle traffic overnight on July 17,” Mr. Smock stated.

Arizona vehicle law requires bicyclists to have proper lighting as required by Arizona law for bicycles and to obey all traffic laws and regulations, he added.
