The Palo Verde Artists art club has named Ron Toel its artist of the month for December.
Toel hails from Iowa but settled in Sun City in 2001. Following graduation from high school, he joined the United States Coast Guard, which saw him stationed in Alaska, New York, Louisiana, Alabama and Texas before he retired after many years of service.
Soon after retirement, he started college and got a degree in park and golf course management. Following graduation, he worked as a golf course manager and professional Pro-Tour caddy and moved to Phoenix in 1977. When he reached retirement age, he settled in Sun City.
Toel’s earliest recollection of creating art happened in junior high, where he expressed himself in abstract painting. His art teacher, however, did not appreciate his modern approach and criticized him in class, which diminished his participation in creativity for many years. It wasn’t until he moved to Sun City and joined Palo Verde Artists that he again showed an interest in painting.
Toel enjoys being a member of Palo Verde Artists, learning from their monthly demonstrations, and volunteering as a model for the portraits group. He is also an active participant in the club’s art gallery and shows, where his art has been displayed.
Toel is also a member of What’s Happening in Arts Movement (WHAM) Veterans’ Program, where he joins other veterans in an art program several times a month for instruction in wood burning, clay, oil, acrylic and more. He enjoys trying different art mediums and is willing to try anything.
His art philosophy is: “To be an artist you need to try it and work at it. Miracles do not happen overnight.”
View Toel’s artwork, which is currently on display in the showcase outside the Palo Verde Artists clubroom on the second level of Sundial Recreation Center, 14801 N 103rd Ave. The Gallery inside the club room is also open to the public for viewing.
Membership in Palo Verde Artists is $10 per year and is open to Recreation Centers of Sun City cardholders only. Visit paloverdeartists.com for more information.
