There is a wall of water rising from the floor of the sanctuary of Shepherd of the Desert Lutheran Church in Sun City, 11025 N. 111th Ave.

The congregation has been donating cash and cases of water, responding to the rapid increase in the temperatures in the desert and inspired by the words found in Matthew Chapter 25 verse 35: “For I was hungry and you gave me to eat: I was thirsty and you gave me drink: I was a stranger and you took me in.”

As of March 23, there were more than 1,200 bottles of water lining one of the walls of the worship area.

Shepherd of the Desert has done water drives in the past, but they started early this year because of the increased need brought on by the COVID pandemic and high temperatures. The church also supports other mission outreach programs like aid to the Navajo Nation, I-HELP (a program designed to help the homeless get off the street and into jobs and eventually their own home), Pan de Vida (a mission church in El Mirage that serves Spanish speaking neighbors), a mission church in Senegal, Africa, an after school program serving the youth of the surrounding communities and a pancake breakfast on the last Saturday of every month.

Shepherd of the Desert will soon celebrate its 60th anniversary soon. The church was built on land donated by Del Webb at the inception of Sun City, as he realized the importance of places of worship to a thriving community.

Shepherd of the Desert is currently under the leadership of Pastor Phil Gustafson.
