Rides available for low-income

Doctor appointments and trips to the grocery can sometimes be difficult when residents don’t have transportation.

Valley Metro has a program called “Ride Choice” that might help. It is for people who are Americans with Disabilities Act certified. To be ADA certified applicants must be unable, because of a disability or disabling health condition, to independently use Valley Metro buses and light rail for at least some trips.

Visit valleymetro.org/accessibility/ada-paratransit/eligibility to check on the criteria.

Ride Choice uses companies like Uber, taxicabs and others. Residents using this option don’t have to share their ride with others. Rides are $3 per trip for up to eight miles and $2 per mile more than that. Rides can be scheduled 24 hours per day.

Participants call for the ride, choose their provider and pay with a credit or debit card. They can schedule up to 20 trips per month. There is no extra charge for wheelchair accessibility. A companion can share the ride at no extra charge.

Sun City Community Assistance Network has help for low-income residents who use Ride Choice. Low-income for this program is defined at a monthly income less than $2,082 for a single person household or $2,818 per two-person. For those who qualify, Sun City CAN deposits $50 each quarter in the rider’s account at Valley Metro. If special needs are involved, such as frequent trips to the doctor, $100 is provided. If there are extra special needs, such as dialysis, $150 is provided.

Sun City CAN has the necessary information and applications to help residents use this program. Call 623-933-7530 to schedule an appointment with a benefits assistance counselor. The CAN office is located at 10195 W. Coggins Drive.
