The last few months, we’ve seen multiple opinions expressed regarding suspect decisions or non-decisions from the Recreation Centers of Sun City Board Of Directors that affect every assessment-paying member.
Most share a common theme about the board’s and general manager’s disregard for the RCSC membership. RCSC corporate bylaws let them do anything they want.
While board directors do everything they can to forbid RCSC membership decision-making, they demand more and more annual assessment money to cover the costs of overspending. Much of the overspending is done secretly, which is why a third-party audit is necessary.
The deeper question becomes, why do our neighbors who volunteer to be on a governing board that is meant to fairly govern Sun City turn into a secret society that stifles RCSC membership involvement?
Why are they compelled to take advantage of the assessment-paying membership? It’s easy to see which directors try to force decisions based on their personal interests or ambitions. Why does this board allow a general manager to spend assessment money at any time to pay anyone for anything in any amount with zero oversight? You can draw your own conclusions.
The solution does not have to be overly complicated. When something breaks, fix it. When something needs to be repaired, repair it. When something needs to be replaced, replace it. When something needs to be maintained, base maintenance decisions on multiple quotes and maintain it.
They should make smart decisions to keep up the fantastic facilities Sun City already has and stop looking for ways to spend millions just so a couple of directors can build monuments to themselves while the membership pays for it.
Sun City can be smartly governed when RCSC decisions are based on the input of the entire membership, not just a few board members and upper management. We all have too much on the line to let this wonderful community fail. But it will take real membership participation to show the board we mean business.
