Sun Cities residents can get an idea of what this area was like prior to community development during a presentation at the Del Webb Sun Cities Museum.
The presentation will be part of the museum’s annual meeting 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2 at the Oakmont Recreation center, 10725 W. Oakmont Drive, Sun City. The meeting is open to all residents and light refreshments will be served after the presentation.
Through a series of articles, written by Sun City resident Bill Pearson, posted on the museum website, residents are getting a clear picture of the history of the Sun Cities after Del Webb started their development. However, the museum annual meeting’s presenation will provide information on what the area was like prior to that.
Sun City West resident Dr. Diane Cheney will be the keynote speaker at this year’s museum annual meeting. Her presentation will cover excavations of Indians, pioneers, dude ranches, Basque shepherds, miners, Castle Hot Springs spa, cowboys, camels, railroads and gandy dancers up to the arrival of Del Webb.
A 27-year Sun City West resident, Dr. Cheney is a facilitator of classes at Rio Institute for Senior Education in Surprise. Her extensive educational background and having lived in a number of countries gives her an interesting perspective on the topics she discusses.
The Del Webb Sun Cities Museum, 10801 W. Oakmont Drive, Sun City is in one of the first five model homes used by Del webb to sell homes when the community opened in 1960. Museum open hours are 1-4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
