County benchmarks show downward trend

Sun Cities COVID number poised to pass 5,000 cases

County benchmarks show downward trend

The Arizona Department of Health Services reported the overall number of Sun Cities COVID-19 cases at 4,920 on Jan. 29. That's an increase of 8% over the last week (4,478). Breaking it down by ZIP code, there were 1,986 in Sun City’s 85351 code and 1,348 in Sun City’s 85373 code, which includes areas of Peoria and Surprise. Sun City West’s 85375 ZIP code had 1,586 cases. These are cumulative case counts and do not reflect those who have recovered.

Here are the number of COVID-19 cases for ZIP codes that include the Sun Cities and some surrounding areas, according to the ADHS. ADHS officials said more than 90% of cases were mapped to the address of the patient’s residence:

The Arizona Department of Health Services has a data dashboard now tracking its three benchmarks for specified business in the state to reopen. Figures represented in the dashboard, updated every Thursday, are about 12 days old to allow for lags in reporting. Benchmarks: ADHS requirements businesses to reopen is fewer than 100 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people, less than 10% test positive for the virus and hospital visits due to COVID-like illnesses is below 10%.

Benchmarks for opening businesses

  • COVID-related hospital visits: 15.5%
  • Test Positivity: 19.5%
  • Cases per 100,000: 689

Hospital ICU capacity

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services tracks hospital intensive care unit capacity. Listed below are statistics showing how near capacity the ICUs are for Sun Cities hospitals for the period Jan. 15-21.
