Stage Left Theatre in Surprise sails for 'Treasure Island'
Youth troupe presents first show of 2023

Stage Left Productions Youth Theatre begins its 2023 season with “Treasure Island,” based on the novel by Robert Louis Stevenson.
“Treasure Island” performs Friday, Feb. 3 to Saturday, Feb. 11 at Stage Left Productions, 11340 W. Bell Road, Suite 105. Performances are at 7 p.m. Fridays and 2 and 7 p.m. Saturdays.
Tickets are $15 for reserved seating and may be purchased at stageleftaz.com or at the box office from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays or by calling 623-285-6321.
The box office also opens one hour prior to a performance.
Jim Hawkins’ adventure begins when Billy Bones, the old sea-dog captain, appears one morning in the Admiral Benbow Inn. Billy admits to Jim he was Flint the pirate’s first mate and that he holds Flint’s map that shows where his treasure is hidden. Jim takes the map, eludes the pirates and sets his course for adventure.
Together with Dr. Livesay they quickly decide to outfit a ship and travel the sea to hunt that treasure. Aboard the ship, Jim meets Long John Silver, who befriends him. But Jim quickly learns who Long John really is and what his plans are.
Once the ship anchors off the coast of Treasure Island the pirates turn on Jim and his companions. Aided by Ben Gunn, the wild and half-insane maroon, Jim takes on the responsibility to save the ship and his shipmates and to secure that treasure.
The play is adapted for the stage by Stage Left Productions Artistic Director Cody Dull, who has taken creative liberties and added a few zany characters to round out the cast, including a talking squirrel played by Addy Dammeyer, and Jim also has a sister Sally, played by Brie Russo, who swoops in to save the day.
The cast features many other talented young actors from the West Valley.
“Treasure Island” is directed by AriZoni nominated director Rachel Cummings. She has directed several youth productions with Stage Left including “Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” “Stuart Little,” “Alice in Wonderland” and “Charlotte’s Web.”
Stage Left Productions is in the Bell Mar Plaza next door to Hurricane Grill and Wings.
