Sparling: Would miss palms if they were removed in Sun City
Posted
In the July 22 edition of the Sun City Independent, the editors were kind enough to print an opinion letter from me (“Remove tall palm trees in Sun City”) where in I suggested that it might be time to consider removing the extremely tall palm trees in Sun City.
In that letter I explained the reasons that led me to make that suggestion. After seeing the letter of mine that the Independent had printed, my closest neighbor, who I respect very much, sent me an e-mail stating that she likes palm trees of all kinds, even the very tall ones.
The next evening my wife and I were outside on our patio trying to spot the Neowise comet, and I looked up at the two very tall palm trees that are most visible to us and I said to my wife, “You know, I would miss those two tall wind vanes if they were gone.” My wife laughed and said, “Well, why don’t you write another letter to the Independent and tell them you changed your mind about them being removed.” Then I laughed and said, “That would just confirm that I was just another old timer from Sun City who was losing his marbles.”
Then in the July 29 edition of the Independent, Rich Andrews of Sun City had a letter (“Resident not in agreement about palms”) that they printed where he expressed his opposition to my suggestion. His letter was very thoughtful and compelling, to say the least, aesthetically. I agree with much of what he said.
However, I still stand by my suggestion. Suggestions represent ideas, and when people put forth ideas and listen to one another with open minds, well you know, “from little acorns grow.”
