The West Valley’s Sounds of the Southwest Singers and Sounds of the Southwest Chorale community choirs have announced their upcoming Christmas concert schedule.

Sounds of the Southwest Singers are performing their Sounds of Christmas concert 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, at the Bellevue Heights Church Block Party, 9440 W. Hutton Drive.

Their final concert of the year, Sounds of Christmas, will be 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, at the First Baptist Church of Sun City, 11019 W. Peoria Ave.

The Sounds of the Southwest Chorale will present Joseph Martin’s cantata, “The Star Arising,” 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, at American Lutheran Church, 17200 N. Del Webb Blvd.

Performances by both choirs offer free admission; however, as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, contributions are appreciated but never required.

The Sounds of the Southwest Singers has 100-plus singers and perform year-round throughout the West Valley. They have sung locally in various venues and for professional sporting events. Nationally they have performed on the stages of New York and Washington DC, Disneyland, CA, Pearl Harbor, HI, Washington State and Alaska. In 2023 the Singers and Chorale participated in recording in the famous RCA Studios in Nashville with composer Joseph Martin.

Both choirs are scheduled to make their second recording, a Christmas album, again in Nashville this coming June, 2025. Internationally they have performed in the UK, France, Germany, Austria, Ireland, and Italy. Last October, members of the two choirs returned from performing concerts in Venice, Florence and Rome, Italy.

The Sounds of the Southwest Chorale performs annually, beginning in September through the following May. They are a smaller group of about 40 singers presenting a more traditional style of music with some contemporary flare to audiences. Members of the Chorale have on occasion traveled with the Singers to perform in the same national and international venues.

In 2010, Founding Director Matt Deller formed the Sounds of the Southwest Singers, and in 2015 founded the Sounds of the Southwest Chorale. In addition to his choral directing, Deller has performed professionally as a percussionist and timpanist in several orchestras spanning his nearly 40-year career. He mentors conductors and musicians to help them perfect their craft. Deller attends choral and orchestral workshops and seminars throughout the country, including in New York, Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and Baylor University, to name a few.

Each group has an extensive repertoire, where the SSWS perform their Patriotic, Faith & Freedom concerts, Sounds of Broadway/Pop, the Sacred Sounds concerts and the new Sounds of the ‘60s and ‘70s. They also perform a Sounds of Christmas and a Variety of Sounds concert, where the music selections encompass all of the different genres in one concert.
