Shepherd of the Desert welcomes new pastor

Posted

Earlier this summer, the members of Shepherd of the Desert Lutheran Church welcomed Pastor John Maroni to serve as their new Senior Pastor.

Pastor Maroni is a native of Youngstown, Ohio. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from the University of Akron, Ohio and a Master of Divinity degree from Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Bexley, Ohio. He was ordained in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America on August 27, 2005.

Pastor Maroni is married to Lisa who is a native Coloradan and graduate of The University of Colorado Boulder. She accepted a position at Paseo Verde Elementary School in Peoria where she teaches Second Grade. They have a few more years before they can live in a 55-plus community.

Shepherd of the Desert is one of the three original churches in Sun City. Pastor Maroni is delighted to serve the first Lutheran congregation established in an active retirement community in the United States.

“I love the phrase ‘active retirement community’ in the description of the congregation,” he stated, “and I love that Sun City calls itself ‘A City of Volunteers.’ People may retire from their careers, but we can always be of service to our Lord. God’s call never goes away even though we open new chapters in our life’s book.”

Shepherd of the Desert, 11025 N. 111th Ave., has traditional worship services 4 p.m. Saturdays and 9:30 a.m. Sundays. There is a shuttle bus ministry. If needing a ride, call 623-933-1359. They also welcome all to attend a free pancake breakfast 8-10 a.m. on the last Saturday of the month.
