Group to continue meeting through summer

The Recreation Centers of Sun City Strategic Alternatives Committee heard presentations about pickleball and clubs interested in utilizing a performing arts center during its June 2 meeting.

The group is tasked with studying the Mountain View rebuild project while it is suspended to see if there are other alternatives for the project. The existing plan calls for a performing arts center, resort pool and gymnasium style multi-purpose building.

The committee meets 2 p.m. every Friday at Oakmont Center, 10725 W. Oakmont Drive. The next meeting is Friday, June 9. The committee will continue to meet through the summer.

Co-Chairwoman Karen McAdam gave a presentation on both national and local trends regarding pickleball. The presentation contained data points from recent nationwide studies, as well as highlighting the accelerating growth of the sport across the nation among all age groups. Data also included growth in Sun City, mirroring the steadily increasing trend lines. McAdam pointed out the relatively low availability of courts in Sun City compared with all other age-restricted communities in Arizona.

Tom Swenson, RCSC Sun City Players Club president, gave a report highlighting the number of groups and clubs other than The Players Club that would be interested in utilizing the space provided by a performing arts center.

Co-Chairman John Fast presented a revised agenda for the overall period the SAC will be active through December.

The topic for the June 9 meeting will be data-based criteria/process for evaluating alternatives. It will be presented by all three of the co-chairs. All documents regarding the SAC can be found on the RCSC home page under the heading RCSC.
