Reasoning behind trial of golfing foursomes

Posted

This letter is in response to Mr. Biderman’ s somewhat disparaging comments regarding the trial of golf foursomes from June through September of this year.  He also postulates the current policy of three carts will be changed to two carts, which is false.

As a member of the Golf Advisory Committee representing WBWC courses, here are the parameters of the trial that was discussed and voted upon.

• Implementation of fivesomes was taken by what is now SCMGA in 1976 when only two courses were available to accommodate all that wanted to play that day. Is that still necessary?

• The trial will consider the impact on increasing pace of play.

• Consider the possibility of reducing the no-show rate, which is approximately 20% now as people book five slots to hold the positions to ensure they don’t have to share a cart with anyone.

• Any impact on the bump rate.

• Increasing the number of carts was discussed with the decision to keep it at three given current USGA input.

So those are the high points of the trial that was discussed. The intent was to improve the playing experience rather than hinder as the author implies. If he would like to have a voice in golf affairs in Sun City, I suggest he attend a Golf Advisory meeting that includes guest comments or volunteer to join one of the greens committees. We actually have one male vacancy for WB that I would be happy to include him in our elections this fall.
