Reader voices thoughts on Recreation Center, golf course fees

Posted

Almost monthly, I read complaints about the recreational centers. I am not involved on the board. I have a dog in the fight, however, as the recreation centers and golf courses contribute to our home’s property value.

In 1961, my father and mother were the first independent insurance agents in Sun City. I grew up in Sun City, so I have a historical perspective on Sun City and currently reside here with my husband.

My father wrote this in 1992 in an interview with The Memory Project. As you read, the issue with recreation centers is a long-standing one.

“As Sun City developed, one of the problems Webb didn't foresee was the recreation centers. Originally, to participate in the rec centers, it was a voluntary contribution. Many people didn't use the centers, so they didn't pay. Recreation centers became a burden.

“After much controversy, Webb Corp. broke off the recreation centers and made them a separate corporation, self-supporting. Still have controversy on the board, but basically successful and well run. Pensions don't always allow for increases, and recreation centers and golf course fees increase, causing a financial pinch.”

The recreation centers with all their many facilities and activities, including our golf courses, which not all residents use, are a big draw when considering homeownership in the area. I know many Sun Citians live on a fixed income. That makes any increase a challenge when pensions or social security increases barely keep pace with inflation.

The costs of running the recreation center increase every year. Insurance rates are sky-high. Finding quality employees for all businesses is difficult. Maintenance costs increase, and delaying infrastructure improvements only delays problems.

I know whether or not we use the recreation centers, all of us have a personal stake in their effective management.
