RCSC should be audited, investigated over fees

Posted

I completely agree with the homeowners who recently wrote on this Opinion page to criticize how the Recreation Center of Sun City does business.

I have lived in Sun City for five years. I am single. I am paying the same assessment amount as two people living in a house, despite that I have only one retirement income.

Essentially, thousands of people do not have to pay. I lost everything in 2009 during The Great Recession — job, new home, most of my savings. You can’t start over after age 60.  But I found work at far less than my previous job, saved and bought a nice home in Sun City.

Last year, I wrote the RCSC to request a temporary financial break. I filled out their financial questionnaire. Their response was that because I had some money in my savings account, I could easily afford to pay the full assessment. When I responded that I had just taken that money out of my 401(k) because I was told I would probably have to buy a new air conditioner soon — both of which I could prove — they sent me another payment demand with an added late fee.

It’s time for an audit and perhaps an investigation by the media. These people are feeding off of us. And it’s going to go up again.
