RCSC prepares for annual meeting amid participation concerns

Posted

The Recreation Centers of Sun City board of directors held its February meeting with an interactive Q&A-style exchange designed to encourage community involvement.

Residents submitted questions and comments through a deli counter ticket system, allowing for open discussion on a variety of topics.

A central theme during the meeting was community engagement, particularly in relation to board elections and participation in RCSC activities.

“It was disappointing to have a turnout of only 1,200 votes for the board election,” said RCSC President Tom Foster.

With several cardholders speaking on the issue, board members agreed a connected community was a priority.

“I got an email that said it’s the board’s responsibility to eliminate the apathy and get people involved. I replied that it’s not the board’s responsibility. We can do what we can do... but peer pressure does a whole lot more. We need to have a community where we’re challenging each other to get involved,” said Rick Gray, RCSC board member.

The meeting saw 33 community members raise questions and offer suggestions on topics such as improving communication, clarifying the board’s budget and introducing new programs like frisbee golf. While these discussions were varied, the ongoing issue of engagement remained a key focus.

Looking ahead to the annual membership meeting Tuesday, March 11, the board heard proposed amendments to the RCSC master plan, prepared for assigning members to committees and encouraged greater peer involvement in the next meeting’s quorum.
