Older adults can participate in creative aging classes

Posted

Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JFCS) has been offering creative aging classes to older adults throughout the Valley since 2017. New sessions are beginning in January and are available through Zoom, enabling a greater reach to interested individuals.

JFCS began a creative aging curriculum to engage and enhance the lives of older adults. Studies show those who are active participants in the arts age better and tend to live longer than others.

“We’re well aware of the crisis of senior isolation, made even worse during the pandemic,” states Janet Rees, director of the program. “We feel fortunate to be able to offer some classes via Zoom and bring stimulating programs directly to individuals in the safety and comfort of their homes.”

New for 2021 is a beginning-level story telling class 1-3 p.m. Wednesdays, Jan. 27-March 17.

WAIT! Why Am I Talking? - Join award-winning writer/performer Kim Porter in this eight-week-long workshop designed to help find, shape and share personal stories. Through guided visualization, writing exercises, games and old-fashioned story-swapping, participants will explore the best practices of storytelling while developing their own short stories to share with friends, family or the world.

Back for those who have some experience in writing is the advanced story making class 10 a.m.-noon Tuesdays, Jan. 26-March 16.

Am I Telling the Story I Mean to Tell? - Join Ms. Porter in this eight-week-long workshop designed to spur inspiration, create accountability, offer support and feedback to established writers and storytellers as they develop their own projects. Each week participants bring work from home to share with the group, receive supportive and facilitated feedback that helps determine if writers are on track. All genres of stories (fiction and creative non-fiction) are welcome.

JFCS is also continuing its personalized small-group voice lessons with Dan Kurek. The class models a master class, with group warm-ups and individual attention to each participant. Learn techniques and skills to improve vocal quality. The eight-week session runs 10 a.m.-noon Wednesdays, Feb. 3-March 24.

Register at jfcsaz.org/creativeaging.

Cost is $100 for the eight-week session. All classes are currently on ZOOM. Technical assistance is available.
