Memory Cafe goes virtual with music program

Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JFCS) continues its virtual Memory Café program, via ZOOM from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 6.
This month’s music program will feature frequent West Valley performer Sun Joo Lee, who will lead an interactive music program. Owner and clinical director of Sunshine Music Therapy, Ms. Lee is a musical director of Shine on Your Light choir for people with dementia and Alzheimer's disease as well as the Tremble Clefs, a chorus for those with Parkinson’s disease.
Upon graduation from Arizona State University, Ms. Lee was approached by the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center in Phoenix to establish a singing group for people with Parkinson’s disease in the Sun City area. The group known as the West Side Tremble Clefs has a counterpart on the east side in Scottsdale called Original Tremble Clefs, which is also directed by Ms. Lee.
The Memory Café is a meeting place for those with changes in their thinking or memory, mild cognitive impairment or dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease or a related disorder, along with their care partners.
There is no cost to the participants, who must have a computer, tablet, laptop or phone to join in. JFCS will have volunteers available to assist individuals coming on, particularly those who haven’t yet used Zoom.
“Perhaps a silver lining in our current situation,” states JFCS’ Janet Rees, “is that having a virtual café will enable us to provide programming inside people’s homes. We know it’s not always easy to get out even in ‘normal’ times when a family is living with dementia. We’re so happy to be able to bring this program to those who need it.”
