Marone: Sun City rec card holders should be able to access all

Have you ever wondered about the duplication of clubs and why it’s necessary to join each specific individual club, depending on which recreation center they meet at? I do!

Let’s use the woodworking clubs for example, although the same would apply to several other clubs as well. There are currently three woodworking clubs located in three different locations. There is one woodworking club at Lakeview, one at Fairway and one at the Bell recreation centers.

We all know that Sun City is not really a city at all, but a community in an unincorporated portion of Maricopa County with a corporation established to “coordinate, implement and aid the various recreational and social clubs.” That’s what the RCSC stands for, Recreation Centers of Sun City. We all pay our annual property assessment fees to the RCSC, which allows us to participate in the many clubs and activities provided by the corporation. And if you were to read Board Policy 12, Item 21 you will see that “All tools, equipment, fixtures and furniture are property of RCSC whether it is original equipment, replacement equipment or additional equipment purchased by or donated to the club.”

Now, step back for a moment and view the RCSC as being similar to, let’s say, the American Legion. When you join the American Legion you are joining the parent organization, which means that regardless of which state or Legion post your membership is affiliated with, you can go to any Legion post in any state and are welcomed as a member.

I view the RCSC as the parent organization that we pay our dues (annual assessment fees) to and the individual clubs are similar to the Legion posts, so why must we be required to pay a separate club membership fee simply because a duplicate club is located in a different recreation center? Remember, the equipment belongs to the RCSC and not the individual club! Not all woodworking club locations have the same equipment, so why shouldn’t I be allowed to simply go to the woodworking shop at Bell center to use a piece of equipment that may not be available at Lakeview without having to join the Bell Woodworking Club as well?

Seems like a fair question to me and I would surly like to hear an explanation that doesn’t involve a conflict with personalities!
