Marone: Bylaw vote doesn’t work that way in Sun City

Posted

What came first, the chicken or the egg? Recreation Centers of Sun City clubs.

If you’re wondering how your RCSC club will elect next year’s officers if you’re not allowed to conduct an in-person meeting because of the coronavirus you’re in for a treat! Watch the video for the Oct. 14 Club Organization Committee meeting starting at the three-minute 45-second mark.

What you’ll hear is amazing. The chairwoman, RCSC board member Sue Wilson, explains that “The clubs can change their bylaws by doing it electronically or by mail, and getting the vote to change the bylaws put in that little adage that they can vote for officers electronically or by mail if it’s in their bylaws…”

What?

So, let’s see if I understand what she’s saying, because I do understand parliamentary procedure. She’s saying you can only vote electronically or by mail if it’s in your club’s bylaws, but then goes on to say that if it isn’t in your bylaws you can vote electronically or by mail to amend your bylaws to allow it!

Sorry, but it doesn’t work that way. If your bylaws don’t currently allow for electronic voting then you can’t vote electronically to amend them!
