Local athlete celebrates success at multisport festival

Sun City resident Ralph Ward competed in the USA Triathlon Multisport National Championship Festival April 28-May 1 in Irving, TX.
Ward competed in five of the eight events over the four-day period, including the Super Sprint Triathlon Time Trial National Championship, a 250 meter swim, 5k bike and 1.2k run (2nd M80-84 age group); the Non-Championship Open Water 750 meter swim (3rd M80-84 AG); the Draft Legal Sprint Triathlon National Championship, a 750 meter swim, 20k bike and 5k run (2nd M80-84 AG); the Standard Aquabike National Championship, a 1,500 meter swim and 40k bike (2nd M80-84 AG) and the Mixed Team Relay National Championship of two males and two females each completing a 250 meter swim, 5k bike and 1.2k run before tagging off to the next team member.
Team Octogenarian, made up of all 80-plus year olds, won the USA Triathlon National Championship in this event coming in first in the 311-plus combined age category in a total time of two hours, three minutes.
As a result of his performance, Ward qualified in the four National Championship events to represent Team USA at the World Triathlon World Championships in Pontevedra, Spain, and Hamburg, Germany, to be held in the summer of 2023.
In addition, by finishing at least five or more of the eight races, Ward was awarded the designation of Multisport Master at the final night’s awards ceremony.
